Today let’s talk about decorating options for the foot of your bed.  No, I don’t mean what type of bedding to put at the bottom, but rather, what furniture can be placed at the end of your bed.

What Works and Why?

Unfortunately, not ALL furniture looks great at the end of the bed, so it takes a little thought and planning when it comes to using this space.  In general, items that look the best are those that are not taller than the height of the mattress; otherwise, the items starts to visually compete with the bed itself and most often, you want the bed to be the focal point in a bedroom.

Here are 9 great options.

1. Benches

Benches look beautiful at the end of a bed because they extend the visual length of the bed itself and allow it to take up more space in the room.  Additionally, they’re quite functional!  A great place to sit and take your shoes off at the end of a long day.

2. Storage

Most people could use a bit more storage so baskets, trunks, etc. are a great option.  While you can put whatever you want in them, it’s nice to store extra or seasonal bedding in them so that they are nearby for easy access.

Anita at Cedar Hill Farmhouse has a great idea with the use of a luggage rack and basket!

3. Sofa

Doesn’t a small sofa or settee at the end of the bed seem luxurious!  If you have the space, this is a great spot to curl up and read or for kids to sit and talk to you at the end of the day!  If you have a TV facing the bed, just be sure that the back of the sofa isn’t so tall that it blocks your view of the TV from sitting in bed.

4. Seating Arrangement

As an alternative to a sofa, you could put two chairs at the end of the bed, with or without a side table between them.  If you have a very large room, you can also turn the seating area perpendicular to the bed for a cozy conversation spot.

5. Desk

If you’re short on wall space, consider using the end of the bed as an anchor for a writing desk.

6. TV

No wall for a TV in front of the bed, no problem!  There are special cabinets designed to raise and lower a TV with the touch of a button.

7. Low Dresser or Cabinet

If you’re in need of drawer or cabinet space, you could consider adding a low dresser to the foot of the bed.  As mentioned before, try to ensure that it is no taller than the mattress, unless your bed doesn’t have a footboard and the dresser is acting to balance out a headboard.  Also, keep decor on top to a bare minimum or leave it blank entirely so as not to give the appearance of being cluttered.

8. Pet Bed

Don’t forget your furry friends!  You can use the end of the bed to give your pets their own sleeping space so they feel close to you at night, without stealing your covers.

9. Nothing

Okay, this might seem obvious but I still wanted to mention it.  Having nothing at the end of your bed is perfectly fine!  If you prefer the minimalist look or don’t have adequate space, leave the space at the end of your bed empty.  You’re not missing out on anything and in fact, will keep yourself from bumping into things in the middle of the night if there’s not enough clearance.  There’s something to be said for negative space…
