I mentioned Friday that I was installing beadboard wallpaper on our bedroom built-in and today I’m ready to share it with you!  When we remodeled our master bedroom, one of our main goals was to create space for a TV, which we didn’t have before with the way the room was remodeled.  I know that for some, TV’s in the bedroom are taboo, but since we use our master like a family room, a TV was a must!

Our master originally had three sets of 8′ tall closets along one wall, so the recessed area for the cabinet was already in place.  We decided to utilize the center closet for our TV cabinet so that it would be centered in the room and we left the other two closets so that they flanked the new cabinet {we also added additional closet space to our bathroom}.  To maximize our space, we removed the front side walls of the closet so that we could access the full space and used the existing alcove to recess our cabinet.  In the remodel process, we also updated the two other existing closets from brass sliding doors to mirrored french doors and added a pediment above each one.

I wanted our built-in to look more like a piece of bedroom furniture and less like a media room cabinet.  Working with the cabinet designer, we came up with the idea to make the bottom part look like dresser drawers, so that it felt more appropriate for a bedroom.  The top drawers are actually drawers that hold DVDs and CD’s {clearly this is Hubby’s collection}.

The bottom “drawers” are actually drawer fronts attached to cabinet doors so that there is ample storage for TV and speaker components.  We have a total of four drawers and four cabinets.

Hubby’s criteria was that the cabinet house the TV he wanted {that rotates on a swivel arm} and include space for speakers so that he could wire up surround sound.  I really wanted a few shelves so that I could display some of my favorite things.  Luckily, we were able to do both.  Both of my kids want their projects displayed in our room so that their art is the first thing we see when we wake up and they take great pride in finding homes in the cabinet for their latest creations!  I also have each of their 1st birthday photos on display – my son’s is paired with his prized clay pig.

My daughter painted me this gorgeous Ariel for Mother’s Day when she was four and I think it goes well with my mercury glass dishes and boxwood, don’t you?!

I also have a lot of old books on display because I love the weathered look and texture and I like the contrast with the clean, white woodwork.  {And see the beadboard in the back?!?!}

I also have a couple of books on either side of the speakers along with my jewelry cloches, again because I like to decorate with a lot of opposites.

On the drawers and cabinets, I opted for crystal knobs with a bronze finish so that they would complement the bronze and crystal chandelier that is in the room.

The top shelves hold a few more books and more of my kids’ artwork.

Ever since we finished up the built-in, we have been much better at keeping organized and I love that all of the wires and components are hidden.  I don’t know that I’m quite done styling the shelves – and I know the kids are hoping to add more clay projects to the display – but I love that what is currently displayed is a reflection of our family.  This was another step in our effort to create a little paradise for ourselves and our family movie nights!

    Hi Kim,

I am in Danville as well. I was wondering who you had build the cabinet.

Hi Katie!! We went with Precision Cabinets in Brentwood. I really like their quality, design ideas, and painting skills, but they unfortunately mis-measured the first time around by 9 whole inches, which delayed our project by about 6 weeks, so I have mixed feelings about them. If you use them, just be sure to double-check their measurements! ;)

      1. Thank you!

  2. This. Is. GORGEOUS. So perfectly executed and I love that you made the bottom cabinets look like drawers which gives it a beautiful built-in dresser feel. I am so inspired by this piece! Do you have any tips on how to find a good cabinet maker/designer?

  3. Cabinets are beautiful but my bigger question is where did you find all the He-Man DVDs???

  4. Your built in is just beautiful. Would you please share how you managed to hide all the wires? Thank you.

Hi Kate – It was actually much easier than I thought it would be! Since the cabinet is built into what was a closet, the alcove is a bit deeper than the depth of the cabinet itself, which left room to run the wires down behind the cabinet. We installed outlets and internet cables in the wall before putting in the built-in. Then, we put a hole in the back of the cabinet where the TV is, one behind each of the speakers and one in the bottom cabinet where the components are. The wires were then fished through the holes. Does that make sense?? :) Kim

  5. I love the built in. It’s great for all the display and yet seems well organized for keeping DVD’s and cords hidden. Great job styling the shelves.
I couldn’t be without a TV in our bedroom. There are times when it feels good to sit up in bed and watch a favorite or recorded program, especially when the nights are chilly.
    xo,

Hi Karen – Thank you! I agree – there are days when I love to be all tucked up in bed watching TV…usually some sort-of BBC mystery – my favorite!

  6. Hi Kim. I’m new to your blog. Love the built-ins!! They are beautiful and love the kids art work!!

Hi Marty – Thank you! I realized that many of the pictures I share on my blog are the more “styled” areas of my home, but real life happens here, too, and showcasing my kids artwork is a part of my real life that I cherish!! :)
