Small Baths with Big Impact

Having a small bathroom, whether it’s a powder room or a full bath, doesn’t mean you have to forgo a space that feels luxurious and elegant, it just means you have to get creative!  In fact, one of my all-time favorite sink consoles is actually designed for use in small spaces.  To me, the Parisian pedestal is an elegant statement piece, but still simplistic enough to not overpower a small space.

Less is More!

The key to creating a big impact in a small space is to create a unified look with just one “wow” factor, while the other elements play a supporting role.  Okay, so maybe you can’t have a fabulous clawfoot tub, spacious shower and oodles of storage in a small bath, but the rooms below prove that when it comes to creating a beautiful space, size doesn’t matter.  Here are 5 ways to make a statement in your small bath!

1. Wall Coverings

A bold wall covering adds instant drama and is often, unexpected in a small space.  And a small wall covered with tile from floor to ceiling adds elegance.

2. Lighting

Think outside the typical bathroom light fixtures!  While the lighting around the mirror is important {especially if overnight guests will be using the space to apply makeup}, you can still look for more decorative options like chandeliers and sconces.  Sometimes, even a small table lamp on the counter that creates a bit of ambiance makes all the difference!

3. Wainscoting

Often times, small bathrooms are small square or rectangular rooms void of architectural details.  A simple wainscoting  – whether beaded, raised, flat or recessed – adds a bit of sophistication and interest to the space.

4. Furniture-Style Vanities

Free-standing furniture style vanities can add a lot of character and charm, giving a small space a big personality.

5. Floating Vanities

A pedestal sink is great for small spaces since it has a small footprint, but it doesn’t provide much usable space on the countertop.  An alternative is a floating vanity, which gives the illusion of more space but still offers storage both on and below.

20 Sophisticated & Serene Bathrooms

My husband said that the next project on the To Do list should be our master bath.  So despite the fact that his idea of “next” is about 10 years from now, I’ve started gathering some ideas in preparation and thought I’d share some of my favorites with you.

In putting this together, I realized that the majority of these rooms feature white cabinetry, which I didn’t realize I was drawn to until now.  After giving it some thought, I suppose I’m drawn to the white for two reasons:  1) it makes the room seem brighter and my master bath doesn’t have a lot of natural light and 2) I love vintage pieces and they tend to be darker and will “pop” better against lighter backgrounds.  So my inspiration for my master bath remodel is to create a sophisticated and serene space where I can relax…
