Whenever I host friends, I always treat my dining table as an opportunity to decorate and create a beautiful display and my recent coffee and pastry get together was no exception.  I had so much fun putting it together and so today, I’m sharing a few tips on how to create a  beautiful and everyday elegant dining display.

TIDBITS&TWINECreating a Beautiful Dining Display

First and foremost, I believe that an elegantly set table doesn’t need to be overly fussy or even include the “good” china.  In fact, basic everyday dinnerware is like the little black dress.  It can be dressed up or dressed down and used for any occasion to provide everyday elegance.  These basic items are practical enough for everyday use, but elegant enough to create a beautiful display for a gathering of friends.

I love the 3-tier Glass Drying Rack because unlike so many, it is more compact and so fits on the counter under the kitchen cabinets allowing easy access to cups and mugs without being in the way.  I also love basic white or cream dinnerware because they coordinate with everything and allow the food to take center stage.  These Provence Salad Plates have a delicate fluted edge that adds interest and detail while still maintaining their simple look.

Tips & Tidbits

  • To get the biggest bang for your buck, invest in some basic pieces that are practical enough for everyday use but pretty enough for special occasions.
  • When creating a dining display (or tablescape), use a variety of heights for added interest.  Choose an item to act as a centerpiece or anchor object in the display and then work down from there.  Smaller items can be given height by placing them on pedestals, trays, or even wooden cutting boards.
  • Don’t be afraid to mix it up!  One display can include both old and new,  shiny and dull, smooth and rough, to create a unique and custom look for the occasion!
  • Group like items together so that they are within easy reach of your quests while maximizing your available space.
