I’m going to let you in on a little secret of mine.  I suffer from a DIY disorder called Distractomania {or at least that’s what Hubby calls it}.  It’s a disorder that only allows me to finish a DIY decorating project about 65% before I get bored, distracted, or tired and then I jump to another project without ever finishing the first!  Yikes!

I have SO MANY projects I want to share with you, but not one of them is finished!  So instead, I thought I’d give you a top-secret, behind-the-scenes look at some of current decorating projects I’m working on so that you can see them in progress.  Plus, showing you might actually motivate me to finish them. :)   I don’t usually like to share UGLY pictures with you, but work-in-progress projects are a reality, and this is mine…

You might remember I started stripping and refinishing my husband’s family antique chairs over a year ago.  Sadly, they are still sitting in the garage waiting to be finished but once they’re done, they’ll be beautiful in my bedroom!  I’ve finished stripping one of them and here you can see how much more visible the detail and carvings are without the layers and layers of mahogany stain.  I still need to strip the other, stain them, and then have them reupholstered.

And while we’re on the subject of chairs, I started painting this desk chair of my daughter’s last week, but then the weather turned and my Distractomania kicked in so I haven’t finished it yet.  There’s a matching desk that needs to be painted, too.  They are pale yellow with gold accents but I’ve put on two coats of white on the chair so far.  {And that’s Mimi…she wanted to see what was going on outside!}

There are lots of other projects going on in my daughter’s room, including an Art Clubhouse in her closet.  She has this odd alcove in her closet that either sits empty or gets piled with random, unorganized stuff {and yes, I realized how lucky she is to have a walk-in closet!  I don’t even have one!}.  She’s only 7 so she’s still small enough to climb up in it and play, so she calls it her “Clubhouse”.  I had an idea just two days ago that I would turn this area into an art station for her.  So far, I’ve bought the supplies and primed it.  We’ll see how far I get before Distractomania sets in…

I’m also working on a gallery wall for her room and truthfully, it’s about 90% finished!  With any luck, I can give you the full reveal next week.  Until then, here’s a sneak peek of some of her super special artwork.

And last but not least on my tour of unfinished projects, I’m doing a bit of updating in the guest room.  I’m not redoing anything, but rather adding more details to the room.  It all started because I bought these cute checked shams for $1 at a staging sale.

My hope is to make some progress in my daughter’s room over the next few days so that we can finish and finally put the room back together.  Please tell me I’m not the only one that suffers from #Distractomania!

What unfinished projects do you have around the house?

  1. …Distractomania’…love that ! ..I have that ,as well…..! here I was thinking…” AM I the ONLY woman whos creative that is suffering from this …??!! ” lol. I have ….oh,….about 4 or 5 ‘ unfinished projects..” and 3 waiting patiently , for warm weather…( snowed today here in the Tall corn state) so I can get to them. …sounds like we have the same thing …they are in a garage,… I knew I came across your site for a reason…I knew I would like you ! lol.
I always have ‘ a work in progress’, seems like….and right now, I m looking at my fireplace mantle, thinking how to snazz it up for Valentines Month ! I start my ‘ spring cleaning ‘ in January , because personally, I want it finished BY spring…to have it done and get going on those 3 projects, that are waiting ! lol. The chairs look so nice, I am sure they will turn out lovely..and your dog is so cute !

  2. Seems perfectly normal to me. Women in general, have always had to juggle their time, and multi-task in many directions. Men not so much. When my husband worked on something, no one disturbed him, with the exception of a lunch or dinner call. That surely does not happen with us women. At least you always have something to work on. Mimi is precious.

For our guest room I have to purchase and re-frame my Great Aunt’s painting and get a print re-set in its frame and hang all of them. It wouldn’t hurt to slipcover the chair in there, work on the bookcase above the desk and accessorize the room a bit more — it needs a tray and coffee pot. And oh, yes! The closet needs to be cleaned out. It’s more a matter of vacuuming and re-placing the shelves.

Then there’s the matter of working on the book shelves. All of them need to be re arranged, the ones in the living room, dining room, entry hall and great room.

I wanted to finish polishing the brass lamp in the living room.

And last, but not least, see about decorating the mantel and giving the living room a little more color punch!

  4. My biggie project not completed is a tablecloth I have been embroidering off and on for the past two years. I keep getting distracted by other projects. The latest was a Halloween inspired wreath.

  5. I knew I suffered from something, just hadn’t had it diagnosed yet. Thanks for putting a name to it. I have an attic with 10 dining room chairs – 8 from my parents and 2 curb rescues. Each year (for the past 3 years) I promise myself that this year they’ll be finished and in use by…(fill in the blank). A few frames that need painting and filling, a hutch that needs lighting, an old desk (currently covered in years of stain and shellac) that so desperately wants a coat of light paint. So yeah, you’re not alone. Do you live in the SF Bay Area? I thought I saw that you were in Oakland

  6. I dont *think* I have any unfinished projects around the house… I have a few I’d like to start, but know they will take some time so I am just avoiding it… it’s okay to get distracted and not finish things right away… as long as it doesn’t take 2 years to finish it…

  7. Kim,
I knew I liked you. I am easily distracted as well and my current project that is languishing in the garage is a re-do of the fall wreath that will hang on the front door. I have all I need to complete the project, it’s just finding a block of time when I don’t feel pressure to work around the house or in the garden!
Love the chairs, they will look great when you finish.
    xo,
    Karen

  8. I suffer from that too! Let’s see, the dining room chairs…about 90% done, a couple of paintings in various stages, a raggie quilt, various sewing projects either started or just have the material for (some are years old yikes), and many, many more. My husband thinks you shouldn’t start a new project until the first one is done. Ha!
Your chairs are going to be gorgeous, your daughter’s special place just perfect along with the rest of her room, and I can’t wait to see the guest room tweaks!
We just have too much we want to do to settle on one project at a time! I totally get it!
