In most homes, storage is often an issue, so the idea of having to display decor items, in addition to storing the items you use every day, can be challenging!  One way to maximize your space is to decorate with items that you use.  You might be surprised at the various ways that everyday items can be displayed to make them look as if they are a creative part of your home’s decor!

Creative Ways to Decorate with Everyday Items

I created a plate wall in my dining room to store my white serving dishes that had been previously stacked on top of my refrigerator.  For me, this was a great way to fill an otherwise empty corner in the dining room without spending any additional money!  You could also create a plate wall using your “good” dishes in order to get them out of storage and be able to appreciate them every day.

Rather than tuck books away in a cabinet or bookcase, they can be used to add height to lamps and vases, or act as filler in a vignette.  If you don’t like look eclectic look of the various covers, you can always re-cover them with fabric or paper.  Tutorial {here}.

Setting up for a party?  No need to buy a utensil caddy when you can use mason jars, vases, or even a sugar bowl!  Practical and pretty!

Don’t store your champagne bucket when not in use!  Instead, use is as a vase, utensil holder, or even leave it empty as part of coffee table vignette.  The shape and color adds elegance and character to any space.

Even cookbooks can become a part of your kitchen decor when grouped together in a basket or tray.

We buy large packs of bar soap and used to store them under the sink.  Recently, though, I decided to unwrap the individual bars and display them on a shelf in a closed cabinet in our bathroom.  As an added benefit, they now scent the towels that are also stored in the cabinet and everything smells fresh and clean!

So before you go out and buy a new decor item, look in your cabinets, closets, and cupboards to see if you can show off what you already own!

Thank you, Pamela! It’s fun to look forward to the next project, isn’t it?!!

  3. I too decorate with my everyday items. My bars of soap are in a container in the master bath. My everyday dishes are on a plate rack that hangs in a wall in the kitchen… way access. My cooking utensils are on the counter top in a container and my cook books in a basket on the ”fridge :) I luv having everything easily accessible.

It does make things much easier, doesn’t it? Of course, my kids and hubby are sometimes unsure as to whether they can actually use these items. My husband just asked the other day if he could use the soap or was it just for display. Lol! :)

  4. Such great and beautiful ideas. I like the way you put the wreath on top of the white plate.

I’m having a give away you might want to check out. ;)
