*UPDATE: I finished my guest room makeover!  You can see how it turned out {here}.

I’m still in the process of figuring out what I want to do with our guest bedroom.  That poor room has had so many uses over the years but it’s never been “decorated.”  For a while, it housed our old queen bed, but the bed took up most of the room and it was difficult to walk around.  We then traded our queen bed with our neighbor in exchange for their daybed with trundle (can you imagine what the other neighbors must have thought when they saw us carrying beds back and forth across the street?!).  I thought for a while that I’d use it as a playroom for the kids, but quickly changed my mind once I discovered that they were in there so much, I never saw them!  We considered making it an office, considered making it a hobby room, but ultimately, decided that a guest room was the most practical for our needs.

I know that I want the room to feel very classic and “grown up” with just a touch of a European feel.  Knowing that we’ll be using twin beds, I’ve been browsing Pinterest for inspiration.  Today, I thought I’d share some of my favorite photos with you in case they inspire you, too!

My “to do” list for our guest room is quite long….I still need to paint, add crown molding, find and hang curtains, have an overhead light installed, and accessorize!  I’m trying to do this room on a budget so it’s taking me a while to find pieces I love that won’t break the bank.  My newly painted headboards and secretary should be ready soon, though!

  1. I love twin beds! I had them in my other house for 12 years. I had two rooms that had twin beds. And no one complained except our daughter! So we had to squish the beds together for her and her husband. Well, they were newlyweds…(no I roll eye here)……… but they were iron and very difficult for us to move. But we managed. (I will never do heavy beds again! ). In my sewing room there was a daybed and that’s where our grandson slept. We had extra long twin beds because he was 6’4”………… I used all blue sheets for the twin beds. That way I knew where they went. Our king size bed were white sheets. I could tell them apart then with no problem. But twin beds are so easy. You can move them into different configurations. I didn’t do that with the iron beds but I can in this house now. In this house we have two king size bed, one queen size canopy, and two twin beds. So now I’m going have to do my ‘’sheet dance’’ a little bit better than this! If your hesitation is about twin beds, I do it if I were you. They are lovely. I do have a lot of lady friends visit. We’re so close to Charleston and Savannah now. In our other house we were in the mountains on Lake Chapala, Jalisco, Mexico. So we had a LOT visitors there!!

One of my guest rooms have twin beds and I have found that it is used more than the queen size guest room if they are given a choice. I was surprised at this but I think the twin give each person more room than two in a queen. I have had to double up on twin sheets as my grandchildren require more “playful” ones and the adults, I assume, like a lux feel and look. If I knew how to post pictures on Pinterest I would show the twin room as I am quite proud of it

  3. I’m considering twin beds upon updating our guest room. Instead of the queen we presently have and would like pros and cons of this.
Queen bed size is 66×80. XL twin is 39×80 and we have the room for two twin beds. Our guests consist of father/son, mother/daughter visits, two girlfriends visiting and married couples while they don’t have relationship problems, do have sleep issues. Crazy leg syndrome, thrashing, sleep arena etc. Also have married couples without any issues but normally sleep on king beds at home.
Would twin beds be a complete turn off if you were a guest?
Our design style is contemporary so they would not look juvenile or dorm roomish. This room is not needed for any other purpose besides guests.

Hi Aubrey – I might be a little biased on this subject because about a year ago, we got rid of our queen bed in the guest room in favor of two twin beds. I made this decision based on two factors: 1) The room feels bigger and more spacious with the two twin beds because the queen took up the majority of the room, leaving only a narrow walkway on each side. With the twin beds, I was also able to add a small desk to the room for guests to use. 2) I felt that having twin beds gave me greater flexibility in terms of who could use the room.

Personally, I feel that if your room is welcoming and the beds are comfortable, guests will be happy with their accommodations regardless of the size bed. This of course varies person to person and also depending on the length of stay, but in general, I think most people are grateful for a space that allows for privacy and comfort. That’s my opinion… :)

I’m in the process of updating my guest bedroom now and will be sharing progress later this week. Please let me know what you end up doing!

    2. Hello! Mother kept extra king sheets and pushed the two twin beds together when a couple was visiting. Then separated them when needed! Win win i think!
