Inspiration for a stunning twin bed guest room! These French-inspired Craigslist furniture finds got a makeover with black paint for an entirely new, sophisticated look.

If ever I tell you that I’m “done” decorating a room, call for help because my blog has been hijacked!

Just kidding….but in all seriousness, I could never possibly “finish” decorating a room because for me, decorating is an ongoing process and an expression of how I feel at any given time.  So nothing is ever “done” it’s just in transition!  And my guest bedroom is no exception, as it recently got a little makeover.

Prepare yourself for the ORIGINAL BEFORE photo….this room was just a storage area with no personality of its own…

Why Use Twin Beds?

My guest room is often used by the grandparents or by the kids when they have a friend sleeping over and with very tight quarters, twin beds just made more sense for us.

The room is visible from the main part of our house and so I wanted it to look nice, but it rarely gets used so I didn’t want to spend a lot money on furnishing and decor.  I was able to use mismatched Craigslist furniture {painted black} with accessories and bedding from Target, IKEA, and HomeGoods to get the look I wanted at a price I could afford.

I always knew I’d make some changes one day, and those changes happened about a week ago.  Here it is today!

French-style Craigslist Furniture

I found the headboards on Craigslist for next-to-nothing and the cute vintage secretary cabinet was from an estate sale. All of the furniture items were painted in Maison Blanch Wrought Iron.

I added two IKEA storage baskets at the end of each bed to store extra linens, pillows, and blankets.  They are also sturdy enough that they can function as either a seat or luggage rack for guests and I love when items can do double-duty. You might notice I also added a rug {yes, a rug on top of carpet}

I styled the cabinet with some book and decor items that I shopped for from other rooms in the house.  {I am a big believer in shopping your own home!}

I added a framed sign letting guests know the Wi-Fi password since that’s a common question for people who stay for an extended period of time.

I also added an ironstone sugar pot with some pencils and a notebook in case guests needed any paper.

And the great thing about this little cabinet is that the top slides forward to create a desk area in case guests need to do any work!

My vintage trophies have been used all over the house for lots of different things, but I’ve been wanting to group them together for some time {I love the way collections look when grouped!}, but wasn’t sure where to display them.  I finally decided that the top of this furniture piece was the perfect display area for the three trophies.

I took some criticism from people for having “His” and “Hers” signs above the bed, but that hasn’t deterred me!  These are just paper inserts I made and had printed up, so I can change them out whenever I want but I still like the “His” and “Hers” because it’s whimsical!  I did paint the white frames a matte black, though, which I like much better.

So this is how my guest bedroom looks today now that it’s had a mini-makeover but stay tuned….I have one more change in mind for this room!

Your guest room is fabulous Who wouldn’t enjoy staying in this room and taking advantage of the comforts you provided – WiFi, hanging scones by which to read, soft, comfy bedding. Love that cabinet between the beds. Love the black finishes. Please tell me where you got the hanging scones. I adore them.

Hi, I’m visiting from Artsy Chicks Rule. Just drooling over your beautiful cabinet with the lovely wire mesh. It’s quite striking! How fun that it’s a Craigslist find! I noticed that you have the book “The Harvester” by Gene Stratton-Porter I love her work, and have all of her books, I think.

I think it’s terrible that someone would complain about your His and Her signs. People seem to be so easily offended these days. Sad. Anyway, your room is beautiful. I’m off to read some of your other posts. (By the way, I think your “Before” is every bit as cute as your “After!” I love ticking stripes!)

I think I asked this from you many months or years ago. But I’m finally getting to my cupboard reno. Where did you get the screens for the cabinets doors?
    Love the look!!!

    1. Tidbits&Twine says:

Hi Linda! The screens came with the cabinet, but try House of Antique Hardware!

  4. Love your room, nice job! Do you mine telling me the brand and black color you used?

    1. Tidbits&Twine says:

      Hi Janice,

They are painted wit Maison Blanche chalk paint and the color is Wrought Iron.

      :) Kim

  5. Love your guest room makeover. Did the cabinet have glass doors originally? If so with what did you replace it? I have an antique cherry china cabinet with one broken glass, that needs a creative fix.

  6. I love that your home is always in transition. It’s wonderful to see someone out there is a lot like me. I’m currently in the mental stages of giving my master bedroom a face lift. Worried black and white would make the room smaller but what you have done is beautiful. The room doesn’t look too dark or uncomfortable…quite the opposite. The pop of navy-love. The touch of greenery-love. The old books, pencils, and note paper-love, love, love. I call “Hers” bed. Thank you for sharing your guest room makeover.

Hi Kelli – So sorry for my delay in responding! Thank you so much for all of your sweet comments about my guest bedroom makeover. I love that you referred to it as the “mental stages” of a face lift. I do that too!!! I sometimes think that the mental planning is the part that’s the most fun! Good luck with your bedroom face lift – I’m sure it will turn out beautifully! :) Kim

Hi Terry – Apologies for my late response! Thank you so much for your kind comments and I’ll definitely stop by to party at Making Broken Beautiful. You’ve done some amazing furniture transformations – so talented! :) Kim

  9. Kim, love the changes. I love the idea of the Wi-Fi password being framed for your guests. Great idea layering the rugs and I think the His and Hers signs over the bed are perfect.

    1. Tidbits&Twine says:

Thank you so much, Kim!! The wi-fi sign is one of my favorite changes….now I don’t have to look it up every time! I’ll share this makeover at your party tomorrow. :) Kim

I love the room! The furniture looks wonderful and I love the new rug. The framed wi-fi info is clever and I’ll be copying that idea for our guest room.
I think the his and hers is very cute.

  11. Pretty room. Like the pop of color with blue. Like your paint color. Would you mind sharing the color and brand name of it? Thank you in advance.

      1. Thank you for your quick response. We used SW latte in our newly finished basement area which has no natural light and think it looks too dark. I believe Nomadic Desert is on the same card and is one lighter than latte. Thank you again.

  12. I LOVE your room!! You did an excellent job!! Superb!! Where did you get that beautiful cabinet in between the beds? I would love to have one like it on my home. Great job! I love your blog BTW. Keep up the great work!!

    1. I actually just read your previous post and saw you got your cabinet on Craig’s list. I’ll keep my eyes peeled for something like that.

      1. Tidbits&Twine says:

Hi Kathy! Yes, Craigslist can you believe? The room really isn’t wide enough for two nightstands so it works out well to have just one piece of furniture between the two beds. I hope you find what you’re looking for! :) Kim

  13. I love everything about this new look. My favorites are the vintage trophies (I’ve been searching for some for quite some time) and the His and Hers signs – I think they’re fun!

    1. Tidbits&Twine says:

Thank you, Jeani! The trophies are reproductions from Antique Farmhouse and I think if you google them, you’ll find they’re still available….at least I hope so! And I’m glad you like the signs. I had no idea how many people would be upset by them but I just thought it was cute! Lol! :) Kim

      1. Sad how in this day and age “Male & Female” is considered politically incorrect! Don’t ever bow to that. Love your room makeover, just found your blog today.

  14. Katherine says:

Love love love!!! Where did you find the adorable lights? Maybe I missed it.

    1. Tidbits&Twine says:

Hi Katherine! Thank you! They are from Pottery Barn. :)
