FRENCH CONSOLE TABLE

A baluster support gives these console tables tons of architectural detail. While both are solid wood, the Wayfair table is actually a bit longer. The price difference comes in part from the brand name, but also, the balusters and base are much chunkier in the RH version giving it an overall look of higher quality.

Side note: A baluster is a single post, and a balustrade is several posts joined together as a single unit

OLIVE TREE

Full disclosure, I haven’t seen the Pottery Barn version in person and I own the Etsy one. Based on written descriptions, though, both trees are VERY similar. Both are 70″/71″ tall, but the Etsy one is 6″ wider. Once you put them in a decorative pot these trees are beautiful. Plus, olive trees are the new fiddleleaf figs!

BISTRO TABLE

To me, nothing says Parisian like a marble bistro table! I think these are so adorable in a breakfast nook, as a side table, or even a nightstand. Both of these tables feature a metal base with a polished top. The World Market table is about 8.5″ inches smaller in diameter than the Pottery Barn one, so depending on use, you might need the bigger table. But for a side table, the World Market one is a great option!

CABLE KNIT THROW

Okay, material does matter if you intend to use your throw as a warm blanket. But if you just plan to drape this over some furniture for a pop of color and an occasional use, then why not get the biggest bang for your buck! The Frontgate throw is made of a wool/acrylic blend and measures 50″x70″. The Target throw is made of cotton and measures 50″x60″. Both feature a cable knit design BUT the Target throw is machine-washable, whereas the Frontgate one is dry clean only!

REPRODUCTION MORA CLOCK

I’m a sucker for a mora clock so when I spied this beauty in the recent Ballard Designs catalog, I was intrigued! The price put me off, though. Here’s why. You can get a REAL VINTAGE mora clock for less on sites like 1stDibs and Chairish! Not to mention, there are some much more reasonably priced reproductions, like this one from Wayfair. I also really love the reproduction from The Bella Cottage. You have to pay attention to overall size and detailing when selecting your clock. Plus, beauty really is in the eye of the beholder. Either way, shop around if a mora clock is on your someday list!

Inexpensive versus Cheap: There’s a Difference

One caveat to this post….often times {but not always}, there’s a reason one item costs less than another, whether is material quality, size, construction, details, etc.  Before buying a less expensive item, give thought as to whether the quality is good enough to suit your needs.  Sometimes, it really is necessary to go with the more expensive piece, but if not, why not score the look for less!

  1. Kim, thank you for the tips. I ordered the olive tree from Etsy (smaller size I think) and I’m very pleased with it. I did trim off the olives, so it looks a bit more “real”. It’s in a corner of my dining room and looks great. Gives me just the height I was looking for.
    Thanks so much.
    Best, Jakalyn

Hi Jakalyn! Thank you so much for letting me know your thoughts about the tree! I only post things that I personally like, but it’s nice to get feedback from others just in case there’s an issue with something that I’ve pick. I have been considering trimming the olives off mine as well…I might do it!

      Have a great day,
      Kim
