TIDBITS-&-TWINE---15-Teen-Boy-Bedrooms

Recently, as my 10-year-old son was making his birthday list, he asked if we could redecorate his room as part of his birthday present.  Whoo hoo!  Music to my ears!  He even said he thought he’d caught the decorating bug from me.  He wanted to run out that day and buy some things, but of course, I wanted to have a plan first.  And for me, having a plan meant finding some inspiration.

Finding great tween/teen bedrooms for boys turned out to be harder than I had imagined!  Girls bedrooms?  No problem!  Boys bedrooms?  Yikes!  I found lots of cute themed rooms for little boys, tons of adorable nurseries for babies, and an unlimited number of boyish-looking rooms that photograph well, but that didn’t seem functional or as if a boy actually lived there {after all, don’t all twee/teen boy rooms have socks and dirty dishes everywhere or is it just mine?!}.

My goal was to find great tween boy rooms that were functional and organized, offering a space for homework as well as playing, and that could transition with them as they grow older.  Not rooms that are purely decorative, but ones that are functional and really showcase their interests like sports, music, video games, and friends.  I was also keeping an eye out for rooms that looked as if they could be created on a realistic budget in a realistic space.  It took a lot of work, but I was able to find some pretty amazing examples!

This is my personal favorite!  I love the display space, plus the neutral with a pop of orange gives it personality without requiring that the entire room be repainted in the event that orange is no longer a favorite color.

It never occurred to me to install a rock climbing wall in the bedroom, but I guess if you’ve got the space, it sure would be a hit with the kids!

A loft bed is a great way to save space in a smaller room!  I actually had one in my college dorm that my dad built for me out of raw lumber.  {Thanks, Dad!}

Separating the Play and Work spaces is a great idea to help keep them focused on the task at hand!

I love the idea of using underneath the bed for storage.  You can read Jenna’s tutorial on how to make these rolling carts {here}.

Stripes, whether on the wall or the ceiling, are both whimsical and sophisticated depending on the colors used and the items they are paired with, so they can easily transition from tween to teen.

I’m going to let my son take the lead on how he wants his furniture arranged, what type of display and storage space he wants, and the overall design {within budget, of course!}.  I might cringe whenever I step in his room if he picks something out of my comfort zone, but after all, it’s his space, so as long as he’s happy I know I’ll be happy, too.

Wish me luck!

**UPDATE** My son has informed me that his “vision” includes bunk beds, a large screen TV, and a mini fridge for snacks and drinks…..Perhaps he won’t be taking the lead on this one.  :)
