Red Stripe Grain Sack 5
This is a gorgeous antique Hungarian grain sack that is approximately40 years old. A bold red stripe down the center create a lovely focal point. This is an actual bag that was once used to store grain. The stripes and weave were specific to each farm and acted as a label as to which farm the grain came front.
This grain sack (#5 in the group photo) measures approximately 49 inches long by 20 inches wide. I don’t normally select red grain sacks but I was so convinced that this would make a beautiful table runner for the holidays that I couldn’t pass it up!
The stripe detailing is on both sides of the bag and there is no seam at the bottom. The two sewn sides could be undone to create one long length of fabric. Grain sacks make beautiful table runners, placemats, chair backs, chair seats, pillows, purses and more! For more ideas, click HERE.
There one red stripe down the center on a heavy woven texture in a light, natural beige color. There do not appear to be any holes, patches or repairs on this grain sack, although there are some inconsistencies with the weave in a few areas. As with any antique, there are discolorations and markings in areas of the fabric consistent with age.
I have soaked the grain sack in a combination of Oxi-Clean fabric softener two times, washed, and dried it so that it is clean and ready for use. The more you wash it, the softer it will become. Wash with hot water and dry in the dryer.
