Owning and hanging artwork doesn’t necessarily mean you need wall space! Often times, decorating cabinets with artwork as a backdrop to tell a story, add color, or dress up an otherwise blank space.
A new year means new artwork! Isn’t that how the saying goes? Okay, I just made that up. But it is true that I like to freshen up my artwork at the start of the new year to zhoosh things up a bit! I’ve written before about great resources for artwork on Etsy, but today’s post is twofold. Today I’m showing you small ways to display art that can make a big impact PLUS giving you some FREE artwork!

Free Artwork
For some time, I’ve offered free printables to subscribers on my site. Recently, though, I started scouring the public domain to find art that is free for everyone to use! I downloaded some of my favorite art pieces and resized them to fit modern-day frames.
These art images are now available to you on my website! They are ready-to-print so all you need to do is download them!
Currently, I have provided art in the following categories:
- Landscapes
- Birds of America
- Botanicals
- Fox Hunting
- Bird Nests
- Winter Scenes
- French Chateaus
You can download and print to frame, put in a gallery wall, or….use them on shelves, like this…
DECORATING CABINETS WITH ARTWORK
While we most often think about artwork as something that is framed and hung above a mantel or piece or furniture, or gathered together as part of a gallery wall, there is a lesser-known use for art.
I love to used framed artwork at the back of cabinets and shelves. Using art in this way allows it to be a backdrop to:
- Tell a story
- Add color
- Dress up an otherwise blank space
Tell a Story – Winter Scenes
One grouping of art that you can download {HERE} includes winter scenes. As part of my decorating transition from Christmas to winter, I printed out two of these images and placed them in my blue hutch.

These winter scenes look cold and barren, so in keeping with the storytelling, I updated the decor in my hutch a bit.

I added ironstone, which is reminiscent of the snow, and removed all greenery. It is now all blue, white, and brown….much like the weather.

I currently have 5 images that you can download and print for your home.
Add Color – Birds of America
John James Audubon’s Birds of America contains gorgeous images that are often used as artwork.

I printed two of them and used them in my guest bedroom because I love how they are set off by the black cabinet.

No frame? No problem! I often like to use a vintage clipboard.

There are 8 different images available to you {HERE}.
Dress Up an Empty Space – Fox Hunting
I wasn’t sure what to put on the top shelf of my family room cabinet and so used a large framed print of hounds to fill the space! While this exact image isn’t available on my site, I do have XX other fox hunting images for you to print and use.

Hang it On the Frame
Another one of my favorite ways to display artwork is to have it hang from the frame. I haven’t actually done this yet, but I’ve been so tempted to do this in my master bedroom!

While searching for these images, I also came across this great tip from From House to Home that shows how to hang art but still have access to the shelves behind!

Here’s a look at other artwork you can download now!
And these French Chateau images that I have on my living room wall!

Hi Kim….
I just downloaded a few of your gorgeous printables. Then I went online to
investigate what type of paper to use, Yikes! even more confusing. What would you suggest? I have an Epson ET-2720 printer. I really enjoy your creative style.
Hi Linda!
For the artwork that I have on my shelves, I just printed it from my home printer on regular paper. For larger or nicer prints, I either use Costco or Nations Photo Lab, depending what type of paper I want to use. For the French chateaus that I printed for my wall, I used a linen textured paper from Nations Photo Lab. I hope that helps!
