I was so honored when Marty from A Stroll Thru Life invited me to participate in the 2015 Summer Home Tour. Hopefully, you’ve been following the tour all week and have seen that gorgeous rooms that bloggers have been sharing {full list HERE}. It’s always fun to get a glimpse into someone’s home, isn’t it?! Today is the last day of the tour and my turn to share!  If you’re stopping by from Simple Details, welcome!

Friday Tour Collage 3

If you’re new here, let me introduce myself.  My name is Kim and I live in an ’80s tract home in the Bay Area California.  My goal is to make my home feel like me, even though it looks like everyone else’s! I do the best I can with a bit of paint, some home decor, and a lot of passion.  I’m a true believer that you should love every item in your home and should never buy something just because it’s the right size or the right color…or even just because it’s the right price {although, who doesn’t love a bargain?!}

I like to create a “collected” look, so I’ll happily mix styles, periods, finishes and textures so that my home is a mish-mash of things I love. I think you’ll easily be able to spot three of my decorating loves – old books, flowers, and texture!

Welcome to my home!  I hope you enjoy the tour!

Dining Room

TIDBITS & TWINE Dining Room REV2

Our dining room is a mix of styles reflecting my change in taste over time.  We purchased our antique dining table at a consignment store before we even moved into our first home 15 years ago.  I’ve since paired it with newer chairs that I added temporary numbers to, but during the holidays and/or special occasions, I like to take the numbers off and tie ribbon around the backs.

Kitchen

When we moved into our current home almost 10 years ago, we didn’t have the budget to completely renovate the kitchen and so instead, updated some of the fixtures and finishes and repainted the cabinets. TIDBITS & TWINE Kitchen 3 2014 REV

Family Room

This is really my kids’ space, so it’s super casual and comfy.  This is the room where they watch TV, play video games, eat snacks, and hang out with their friends.

To better “disguise” the TV that is hanging on the wall, I created an eclectic gallery wall around the TV using a mixture of vintage items, art, and family photos.  I’ve actually just started updating this wall to include some new art and items but I’m not quite done yet.  New photos to come soon, though!  :)

Guest Bedroom

Our guest bedroom got a mini-makeover with the help of some mismatched Craigslist furniture.  A coat of paint and it’s like these pieces were always meant to be together!

The room is narrow and there wasn’t enough space for each bed to have a nightstand, so instead, I’m using a hutch in the middle to serve both beds.  This hutch used to be yellow with gold accents, I prefer its new look in classic black.  And the top slides forward so that it also functions as a small workspace for guests!TIDBITS-&-TWINE-Guest-Bedroom-Desk-with-Chair

Guest Bathroom

Earlier this year, we remodeled our guest bathroom to make it lighter and brighter.  Here’s what it used to look like.

Here’s what it looks like now!

A guest bathroom transformation: from builder-grade to beautiful! Beadboard ceiling, wallpaper, sconces, marble floors, and a vanity converted from a vintage dresser!

The whole project started because I found this dresser at an antique fair and decided it would make the perfect vanity.  Since the vanity is antique with a lot of texture, I paired it with sleek marble and satin nickel finishes to add a lot of contrast.

Master Bedroom

We completed a remodel on our master bedroom about a year-and-a-half ago, but can you believe, I still haven’t finished decorating this room?!  It always seems like this is the last room to get my attention….  One of my favorite things about the remodel was the new fireplace surround we put in.  On cold Winter nights, this is my favorite spot to curl up!

I’ve added a touch of industrial to the room to keep it from feeling overly feminine and one of my favorite pieces is my vintage dress form.  We jokingly refer to her as “Stephanie” and even though I’ve had her for a while now, I still sometimes scare myself at night if I wake up and see her outline because I think someone is in the room!  I currently have all of my grandma’s pearl necklaces layered on the dress form, but I have a new plan in mind to change things up a bit so stay tuned!!TIDBITS & TWINE Master Bedroom 5 2014

  3. Hi Kim-
I am so impressed with what you’ve done to your 80’s tract home!! It’s darling…very classic and vintage. I am curious which town you live in in the Bay Area, if you don’t mind my asking. I live in the East Bay in San Leandro in an old English tudor- all we could afford 30 years ago. I love your style and will continue to watch your creativity unfold!!

Hi Liz – Thank you so much for your kind comments! San Leandro has some amazing architecture so I can imagine that your English tudor is fantastic! I am in Danville. We’ve lived in various Bay Area cities over the years but now that our kids are in school, I think we’ll be here for a while. :)

  7. Your home is enchanting! And you may have inspired me to repaint my chintzware china-filled armoire expresso brown or even black. It’s country blue with huge pink roses all over it right now, toned down with a white waxing. (Painted myself. No talent. Just guts.) Thanks for the tour.
