Today was our first day visiting Colonial Williamsburg in Virginia. The 18th-century capital city is brought to life in this 301-acre historic town with the day-to-day activities of the townspeople re-enacted in vivid detail. We walked for hours on end, looking, exploring, and touring, fueled mid-afternoon by a stop at the candy shop.
Today I’m sharing a few of my favorite photos from the day, which are a mix of townspeople, nature, and architecture. I’ll admit…..born and raised in California, there are a few things I’m obsessed with in Colonial Williamsburg: basements, dormer windows, and shutters. Now depending on where you live, these might seem like ordinary things to you, but where I live, no one has a basement, dormer windows are few and far between, and if a home has shutters, they are purely decorative, not functional. In fact, I’ve never before seen a working shutter and had to stop and take a picture to remind myself how it functions!
Spring seems a bit late for this time of year, but a few flowers were in bloom.
Everyone was so friendly in the town! This man was playing a beautiful song to a dog that was completely enthralled! And we learned that the worker below was the original “Tinman”.
Weights attached to a chain allowed for the gates to close automatically. Isn’t that clever?!
And here’s three more of my favorite pictures:
By the time we got back to the car from Colonial Williamsburg, I was completely exhausted and ready for bed….until I spotted a sign for an antique mall, that is! It turns out Williamsburg is home to an antique mall featuring over 400 vendors. Suddenly, I was revived and ready to shop!

Just a wonderful place to visit. Thanks for sharing.
I have always wanted to visit Williamsburg—as a fellow native of California, it’s those architectural details in Eastern homes that intrigue me most. Thanks for the armchair tour.

Oh! Beautiful pictures of an enchanting place. We are going in the Fall and I can’t wait!
Oh, LOVE that place. Being a Florida girl all those things speak to me too. Especially a basement!
Great post of your trip. I want to visit there some day soon. Love the last picture of the cow. Too sweet. Ha ha I am like you I feel exhausted after a long day and then just when you think you are too tired to shop anymore a sign appears for more LOL! Sounds like you are having a great time.
