Normally, I start decorating for Christmas in October — not because I’m eager, but because brand commitments and photos always push the season early for me. It’s become a running joke in our house that the kids have taken their Halloween pictures in front of the Christmas tree for years.
But this year, with no contracts to fulfill, I decided I’d wait and decorate like a normal person. And then… I procrastinated. And procrastinated. I kept putting it off, dreading the hours I usually spend decking out every corner.
Eventually it hit me: decorating doesn’t have to be a big production. A few festive updates are all it takes to set the mood and create that cozy, Christmas atmosphere.
So instead of hauling out every bin, I focused on the quick things — the little changes that make a room feel instantly more festive without an afternoon of rearranging. If you’re in the same boat this year, these easy Christmas decorating ideas will help you get that warm, holiday feel with almost no effort.
Add a Bowl of Ornaments
One of the fastest ways to make a room feel festive is to gather a handful of ornaments and pile them into a bowl. No tree required. I like mixing different finishes — matte, shiny, mercury glass — but even a single color palette looks beautiful. This works on a coffee table, console, kitchen island, or even a nightstand if you want a small touch of sparkle. You can also try an assortment of jingle bells instead of ornaments if you’d like!

If ornaments aren’t your style, try using a flat-bottomed bowl and filling it with votives or candles instead. It creates a warm, glowy moment that feels just as festive and takes almost no time to pull together.

Styling Tip: Use a pedestal bowl or footed compote if you want a little more height and presence. It instantly makes the simplest ornaments feel more grand.
Swap Artwork for Holiday Prints
If you want a quick idea that feels surprisingly pulled together, try swapping out a piece of artwork for something seasonal. Winter landscapes, vintage Santa portraits, old-world still lifes — anything with a hint of holiday mood works. You don’t need to hang anything new, either. Just pop the print into an existing frame or lean it in front of a piece you already have.
There are so many amazing pieces that are FREE on the public domain! You just download and print, it’s that easy! You can also find my free Frame TV art HERE.

Styling Tip: Layer a smaller winter print in front of your everyday artwork for extra dimension. It adds that collected look without you having to rearrange an entire wall.
Add Ribbon to… Well, Almost Anything
If you only have a few minutes, ribbon is one of the easiest ways to make your home feel festive. A simple strand can soften a room and add just enough Christmas charm without pulling out a single decoration bin. And it works in so many spots people often forget about.
Try adding ribbon to:
• sconces or pendant lights
• the ends of a garland
• candlesticks or taper candles
• cabinet knobs or drawer pulls
• the back of a dining chair
• a picture frame or mirror corner
• baskets, jars, or vases
• a wreath (or even a bowl of ornaments)

Tuck in a Little Greenery
A few sprigs of cedar or fir can make any spot feel instantly more Christmas-ready. Tuck greenery into bowls, trays, baskets, or along a shelf — it doesn’t need to be a full garland to have an impact. Real or faux both work, and even a small cluster adds that fresh, seasonal look with almost no effort.

Add a Wreath in an Unexpected Spot
A wreath doesn’t have to live on the front door. Hang one on an interior door, a window, or even the back of a dining chair for an instant hit of Christmas cheer. If you want something a little different, lay a wreath flat on the table and fill the center with candles or a bowl — it makes the easiest centerpiece and looks like you spent far more time than you did.

Switch Out a Pillow or Add a Cozy Throw
You don’t need new holiday pillows to make a room feel festive. Even swapping in a single winter texture — knit, velvet, boucle, or plaid — can shift the entire mood of a sofa or chair. And if you don’t want to commit to pillows, just drape a soft throw over the arm of a sofa or across a bench for an instant seasonal update.

Create a Quick Little Vignette
If you have a tray, a candle, and a sprig of greenery, you’ve got a holiday vignette. This works anywhere — the entry table, nightstand, coffee table, even the kitchen counter. Grouping just a few festive pieces together instantly creates a focal point, and it takes far less time than decorating an entire surface.

Styling Tip: If you’re not sure where to start, you can read my tips for creating vignettes HERE.
Fill a Basket with Wrapped Gifts
If you have a basket and a few wrapped gifts — or even empty boxes wrapped in pretty paper — you’ve got instant holiday decor. Set the basket near the tree, next to the fireplace, or in an empty corner that needs a little life. It looks festive right away and takes almost no time at all. I have a few wrapped boxes that I use year after year. I just store them away like all my other Christmas decor!

Add a Holiday Scent
A simmer pot on the stove, a seasonal candle, or even a quick diffuser blend can make your home feel Christmasy in minutes. Scents like pine, orange, and clove instantly signal the season, even if you haven’t decorated much yet.
At the end of the day, Christmas decorating doesn’t have to be an hours-long project. A few small changes can completely change the mood of a room and make your home feel warm and festive, even when you’re short on time. If you’ve been putting it off this year the way I did, I hope these easy Christmas decorating ideas help you get started without being overwhelmed so you can enjoy the season a little more.
