Lately, I’ve been thinking about moving the basket that I’m using at the end of my sofa and replacing it with a functional side table. Technically I don’t need an end table for my sofa since my coffee table is within reach of all sofa seats, but I always like to change things up…

So, I started looking online and finding my favorite side tables. Since I’ve done all the research, I thought I’d share my favorites with you today!

But first, let’s look at a few “rules” to ensure that you get an end table that’s right for you.

End Table Sizing Guide

  • The ideal height for an end table is for it to be the same height as the arm of your sofa or chair. Within 1″-2″ is fine, but it’s better to go on the shorter side than the taller.
  • Mix up your legs! If your sofa or chair has exposed legs, consider a solid end table, like a drum table or garden stool. If you sofa or chair is upholstered all the way to the ground, then show a little leg with your side table!
  • Don’t choose a depth that is deeper than your chair or sofa. Look for a table that is the same depth or smaller.
  • Place your side table within an inch or two of your furniture so that it’s easily accessible from a sitting position.
  • When choosing size and style, consider what you need it for when determining the size and shape. Do you need it to hold a lamp? Does it need storage? What will you be accessorizing it with?
  • Nesting tables are the exception to the rule: The largest nesting table can be taller than the arm of your furniture so long as the smaller one is shorter and visible.
  • You can use two different end tables flanking a sofa so long as they are almost identical in height and visual weight.
  • For a low-profile sofa or chair, if you can’t find a table that is low enough to be arm-height, you can use the height of your throw pillows on your sofa as a height guide.
  • If you have a sofa or chair with no arms, choose a table that would be the imaginary height of the arms.
  • A martini table is a type of small side table specifically meant to hold a drink and be small enough that it can be moved for convenience.
  • When shopping, the terms side table and end table are synonymous, so be sure to search both terms when shopping online. Also, don’t forget about nightstands! Smaller nightstands can make great end tables.

I’m a little bit obsessed with the fluting on #1 since fluting is trending this year plus it offers some storage. And #5 is a great Restoration Hardware dupe for a fraction of the price.
