7 Styling Tricks That Elevate any Room

You might not need new furniture at all, just a few styling tricks that make everything you already own look better.

Sometimes it’s not about what you own, it’s about how you style it that makes all the difference.

If you think about it, the same outfit can feel completely different depending on your hair and makeup. A sleek ponytail versus loose waves. A bold lip versus none at all. The clothes didn’t change, but the overall look did.

Rooms work the same way.

You can have beautiful furniture and still feel like something’s missing. Or you can take very ordinary pieces and make the room feel elevated simply by how you arrange and layer them. It’s rarely about buying all new things. More often, it’s small styling choices that change the entire feel of the space.

Today I’m sharing seven styling tricks that consistently make a room feel elevated with no renovation, no major purchases, just simple tips that instantly add polish.

1. Hang Art at the Right Height

One of the quickest ways to make a room feel elevated is to make sure your art isn’t floating too high on the wall.

When artwork is hung at the proper height — visually connected to the furniture below it — the entire space feels more grounded and pulled together. When it’s too high, everything underneath looks disconnected, even if the furniture itself is beautiful.

It’s a small styling trick, but it instantly changes how finished a room feels.

2. Use the Rule of Odds

This is a simple trick that makes decor look like it’s been professionally styled. And it couldn’t be easier. Simply arrange your decor in groups of three, five, or seven. That’s it.

Okay, well… there’s a little more to it.

Odd numbers naturally feel more balanced and less stiff than pairs. When you group decor in threes, fives, or even sevens, your eye moves through the arrangement instead of stopping at it. It feels layered without feeling busy.

This works on coffee tables, consoles, shelves, nightstands and almost anywhere you’re styling a surface. Instead of placing two candlesticks side by side, try three at varying heights. Instead of two objects on a tray, add a third element for contrast.

It’s one of the fastest ways to make a surface look styled instead of randomly arranged.

3. Add Something Organic — and Style It

I use a lot of flowers and greenery because plants add comfort and a sense of freshness. They blur the lines between indoors and outdoors so the space doesn’t feel completely manufactured.

Greenery or flowers are always my first choice because they bring in natural color. But it’s not just about bringing something in…it’s about how you style it.

If you’re using faux botanicals, open up a few petals so they don’t look stiff straight out of the package. “Plant” your faux tree in a larger pot and top it with real soil or moss so it look real. Remember, nature isn’t symmetrical and your decor shouldn’t look like it came straight from a box.

And if you don’t have a green thumb, preserved boxwood, feathers, seashells, wood, aged paper, and even candlelight can all introduce that same natural warmth. You can find some of my favorite faux greenery HERE and my favorite faux flowers HERE.

4. Layer Texture

Luxury does not require a big budget. One of the easiest ways to make a room feel elevated is through texture, but not all textures create the same effect. Some feel casual, while others such as velvet, brass, and marble add instant sophistication.

Texture gives a room depth. It makes even simple pieces feel layered instead of flat.

You do not need major upgrades to get this look. Small touches like pillow covers, trays, baskets, or lighting can change the entire feel of a space.

5. Add One Piece With Age

One of the easiest ways to make a room feel elevated is to include at least one piece that isn’t brand new.

When everything in a space looks like it arrived last week, the room can feel generic — even if it’s beautifully decorated. A single piece with age adds depth and character immediately.

It doesn’t have to be a valuable antique. It could be a vintage mirror, a small wooden stool, a stack of worn books, brass candlesticks, or an old frame around new art. Something with a little history breaks up the sameness and keeps the room from feeling like a catalog page.

That contrast is what gives a room personality.

6. Ground the Room With Something Black

Sometimes a room can look perfectly pretty and still feel unfinished. Often what is missing is not more color or more accessories, it is a touch of black. Just like a little black dress in fashion, black in decorating is classic, versatile, and instantly elevates everything around it.

Black is not about making your space dark or moody. Even just a few small touches can give the eye a place to rest, balance lighter tones, and add definition that makes a room feel polished.

Start small. Think black picture frames, a dark tray, a coffee table with black legs, or even a pillow with black detail in the pattern.

7. Hang Curtains High & Wide

One of the easiest ways to make a room feel elevated is to hang your curtains higher and wider than you think you should.

When the rod sits right on top of the window trim and the panels barely cover the glass, the window looks smaller than it actually is. And that makes the whole room feel smaller. Instead, mount the rod closer to the ceiling and extend it several inches past each side of the window frame. That alone changes the proportions of the entire wall.

For standard ceilings, I like to hang the rod as close to the ceiling as possible, just below crown molding if you have it. And make sure the panels can stack fully to the sides when they are open. You want to see the window, not fabric blocking it.

This is not about adding more curtains. It is about placement. And placement is what makes the room feel finished instead of average.
